Who was Dom Perignon?
Dom Perignon is known as the most prestigious cuvee of Moet et Chandon House and one of the most famous champagne in the world. But did you know that Dom Perignon was acutally a monk involved in the development of Champagne as a sparkling wine.

Pierre Perignon was born in 1640, he was the son of a clerk to a local judge. At 19, he became a Benedictin monk in the Abbey of Saint-Vannes at Verdun. At only 28, he became the cellar master of the Abbey of Hautvilliers!

The first record of sparkling wines production in France dates back to 1531 in Limoux (south of France), that is about one century before Dom Perignon's birth. But he was a great wine grower and maker and he studied how to blend wines. According to the legend, he was the man who found out how to avoid corks' explosion due to pressure inside the bottle using a wire.

Dom Perignon died in 1715. He was buried in the middles of the vines.
